40 feels a tiny bit too small, 44 feels a tiny bit too large. 44 with a band that has lugs is firmly large on me. I wouldn’t say the 40mm looks small, it’s perfectly in proportion to your wrist IMO. You can see a bit of the strap each side of the face whereas the 44mm just looks like a screen on your wrist.
I like it for the bigger screen alone, even if the 40mm has the same screen size as the old 42. I’m of the opinion that at the end of the day, it’s still a smart watch not a Rolex. Even if it looks a little big, it isn’t that big of a deal IMO. If you’re buying it from Apple you’ll have no issues returning it if you change your mind.
The 45mm is noticeably heavier and does in fact get in the way. It also was being compressed down on my wrist with just enough added force over the 41mm that my skin would become slightly pale/ smooth, due to it not getting enough circulation. I don’t have small wrists, the 45mm is more proportionate to my wrist.
